Summer Course

Summer Course

Annually, the Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders brings a select group of 18 national and international, highly qualified young researchers to Flanders. They are offered an intensive 11-day programme of lectures, discussions, and visits related to a specific art historical period of Flemish art. The Summer Course provides the participants with a clear insight into the Flemish art collections from the period at hand, as well as into the current state of research on the topic.

Participants have a master's degree or are PhD student, junior curator or restorer and they are specialized in the specific art historical period the Summer Course is focusing on that year. The master's degree was earned maximal 10 years ago.

Since the start in 2014, four editions have been organized: The Age of Van Eyck in Context (2015), The Age of Rubens in Context (2016), Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture in the Low Countries (2017) and Belgian Fin de Siècle 1880-1914 (2018). In 2019, the Summer Course focuses on The Age of Bruegel in Context.

Upcoming editions:
2020: The Age of Van Eyck in Context
2021: The Age of Rubens in Context
2022: Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture in the Low Countries
2023: Belgian fin de siècle 1880-1914
