Lecture 'Alabaster sculpture in the Burgundian and Habsburg Netherlands'

The Flemish Research Centre for the Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands organizes, as it did in the past, a series of lectures. During autumn 2014 4 guest speakers will talk about sculpture.

The Flemish Research Centre for the Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands is an initiative of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges. The centre was established in 2010 with the following mission: to stimulate research on the art of the 15th and 16th-century Burgundian Netherlands and disseminate this research at an international level.

Alabaster sculpture in the Burgundian and Habsburg Netherlands c. 1400 - 1530

The famous funeral cortege from the tomb of Philip the Bold at the Chartreuse de Champmol is without doubt the best known alabaster sculpture associated with the Burgundian Netherlands. But what happened to alabaster sculpture after that? This lecture will take a look at the place of alabaster in the sculptural traditions of Low Countries sculptors working both at home and abroad as far afield as Castile in Spain.

Lecture by dr. Kim Woods from The Open University (UK).
