The sequencing of the Seven Sorrows was, apparently for the benefit of the viewer, indicated on the panels numbers 383-389 by a single letter: Devotion in the temple (a), Flight into Egypt (b), Jesus among the Scribes (c), Carrying of the Cross (d). The remaining three were not lettered, or perhaps the letter was painted over or wiped away. (Crucifixion, Mourning, Entombment). Previously this was the tableau of the altar of the Seven Sorrows in the Saint Katherine Church of Hoogstraten.
