After earning a Master's diploma in Law from the University of Vienna in 2003, Blauensteiner was promoted to Doctor in 2004 under Professor Christoph Grabenwarter. He did this with the thesis Die Instrumente des Denkmalschutzrechts. Rechtsfragen zum Kulturgüterschutz in Österreich. In 2006, Blauensteiner earned a Master's diploma in Art Sciences with the thesis Studien zu Hendrick ter Brugghen. Ein Utrechter Caravaggist im kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext (Professor Michaela Krieger, University of Vienna). Since October of 2007, Blauensteiner has worked on a doctorate with the working title, Hieronymus Boschs Garten der Lüste und Pieter Bruegel d. Ä. Zur Funktion der frühneuzeitlichen Malerei in den Niederlanden. He is doing this at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, under the guidance of Hans Aurenhammer.As of 2010, Blauensteiner is a scientific assistant at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
