Memling symposium

Hans Memling, Christus met zingende en musicerende engelen, KMSKA.

To celebrate the completion of the conservation treatment of Christ with Singing and Music-making Angels by Hans Memling, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the University of Antwerp organize a two day symposium.

One of the highlights of the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp is Christ with Singing and Music-making Angels attributed to Hans Memling and assistants. For 16 years a team of conservators and scientists have been involved in the complex conservation treatment of these three large panel paintings that undoubtedly belong to the most monumental works in early Netherlandish art.

Lectures by renowned experts

On March 13, lectures will be delivered by (inter)national specialists from famous institutions. In addition to Belgian participants, the programme includes speakers from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the National Gallery (London) and the National Museum (Krakow). A variety of topics will be covered, among them the restoration treatment, painting technique, research and art historical context. At the end of the day 15th-century music will be performed by Oltremontano in cooperation with Psallentes.

Exclusive visit to the conservation studio

On March 14, the attendants to the symposium are offered the exclusive opportunity to see the restored paintings in the conservation studio of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. A shuttle bus will be provided.
