Van Schoute was a widely respected art historian and researcher. In the 1960's, he established the Laboratoire d'études des oeuvres d'art (Musée de Louvain-la-Neuve) and was the driving force behind the symposium l'Étude du dessin sous-jacent et des technologies de la peinture (since 1975).
