The holy one, dressed as an abbot with a staff in the right hand, prevents Emperor Otto from entering a church. He reproaches the royal for the un-reconciled murder of Senator Crescentius and infidelity with his wife; so long as he has not performed a public penalty, entrance to the church is forbidden to him. The Emperor, accompanied by two dignitaries and by a dwarf who holds his sword, crosses his hands remorsefully over his breast. In the background, on the right, are three monks in white habits of the Camaldulenser Order, established by Saint Romuald.
