The Crucifixion scene is crowded into the small attitude of the panel. The golden background and the gathering of fully golden aureoles lend the tableau a precious and solemn character. The man looking up is directly inspired by the right panel of the lost Deposition of the Master of Flémalle—Robert Campin (Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt). Likewise indebted to the Master of Flémalle is the strong contrast between the spaceless golden surfaces of the background and the sculptural-realistic bodies and subjects on the foreground. On the backside, a painting is made with Saint Dorothea on it, who receives a basket of flowers from an offering angel. The background consists of decorative foliage.
